Students take political participation into their own hands.
Recent media hype about the apathy in young voters is being proved wrong right here on our doorstep in Devon and Cornwall. Plymouth University has set up a brand new Conservative Future branch in what seems to be a growing trend of new branches springing up right across the region.
Steven Ricketts, Councillor for Drake ward in Plymouth, and ex-student and President of Plymouth’s Student Union 2003-2005 had this to say: “I am delighted to see that young voter apathy in the Conservative party no longer exists. I am sure that this is the start of a popular and fruitful Conservative Future branch within Devon and Cornwall.”
This is a fantastic step in the development of Devon and Cornwall Conservative Future, as they now have Students in the area who are taking the initiative of establishing branches through their own work.
The Plymouth University branch has signed up over 20 members and is already growing an impressive feat considering that it was only ratified by their Students Union last week with the support and backing of Oliver Colvile, Plymouth Sutton and Devonport PPC.
“It is a sign of the strength of Conservative Future in Devon and Cornwall for students to be establishing a branch through their own initiative. It is even better to think that Devon and Cornwall Conservative Future now have 4 branches throughout the two counties compared to our 1 branch last October.” - James Morton, Acting Chairman of Devon and Cornwall Conservative Future.
Devon and Cornwall CF now have the following branches: Exeter University, Plymouth University, Exeter City and East Devon, and Truro. Given that 3 years ago there was only 8 members in the whole area, the explosion to well over 300 members can only be described as an incredible burst of enthusiasm for youth participation in politics, on both a local and national level.
